Well, what can I say? This is one of the more disturbing passages of scripture out there. For two short verses, it says a lot…
With the first line – uh, 50 pieces of silver? That’s it? What about all of this stoning and “eye for an eye” justice that the Bible is so well known for? Now to the second line – WAIT A SECOND!!! She has to marry her attacker? And the poor girl can never divorce to escape the torment of the animal that raped her?
Many might argue that this was the most merciful thing to do for the poor girl back in those days. Now no longer a virgin, she would have no real hope for the future and the rapist would be responsible for her well being – in a basement, in Cleveland, with the two other girls he got for fifty shekels.
Actually, maybe these single girls really are getting off too easily out there in the suburbs. For just a few verses earlier – if an engaged woman doesn’t scream loud enough while being raped in the city, she shall be stoned to death! (Deut 22:23-24)
I’m not a rapist, but if I were, I’d definitely be a Christian rapist, because this sounds like a great deal to me! Even better – I might get into sex trafficking, because I know that I could earn a tremendous profit on my 50 pieces of silver within a couple of days with one of these sweet young things – especially for a white American virgin! (Plus, I’d have the added bonus of being forgiven of my sins.)
God, Our Father. Only a loving father would sell his 8 year-old girl to a pedophile in a white van.
