The Last Supper
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink!” – John 6:53-55
Growing up in the church, and spending the majority of my life involved in ministry, it wasn’t until I had to explain the act of Communion to my own children that I was forced to take a step back and really think about what it looked like to “outsiders”.
“Drink his blood? That’s gross!” cowered my daughter (9)
“Eat his body? Which parts?”, my son asked. (8)
Their questions might seem childlike and naive. But, I had to take a step back and think, “Wait a second, if I wasn’t raised in the church, drinking kool-aid and eat saltines at communion since I was 5 – what would I think of this act?”
