I never really thought much of this story. Sure – I could recite the standard apologist retorts, but in all honesty, to me, it was always just another allegory using a talking animal – just like any other fable or fairy tale. I wasn’t even going to bother with the story until I received the following email:
Barbara: There is no question that the donkey actually spoke to Balaam. God is using this story to illustrate that animals have consciousness and the ability to reason. If God gave the power of speech, He also gave the power to reason because it carried on a two-way rational conversation with Balaam. The story proves that animals have souls and they will be in heaven with us! This is a great comfort to those of us who love our pets.
Me: Do you mind if I ask you a follow-up question? Why don’t we see more evangelism being directed toward animals, then? Have you been able to lead your pets to accept Jesus? Are they not required to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior? Why the free pass?
Barbara never wrote back. The impressive thing about this story is how a talking donkey suddenly makes a sword-wielding talking angel seem completely plausible – no questions asked.

Remember: Don’t blame us, it’s in the Bible!
